- Habitat: Exposed reef; 0 - 40 m depth
- Distribution: WA to NSW and around Tasmania
- Maximum Size: Length to 200 mm

- Comments:
- Blacklip abalone are the most common found in and
around the Marine Discovery Centre. We do occasionally find Greenlip
abalone (Haliotis
laevigata), this distinguished by the smooth, light coloured shell and
green edge and tentacles. Blacklip abalone have a black edge and
tentacles, with the shell often heavily eroded and covered by algae and
invertebrates. The Blacklip abalone is the third most valuable fishery
species in Australia, with the annual catch worth about $100 million.
Greenlip abalone provides about one-fifth of the total commercial
abalone catch and is considered the better tasting abalone of the two.
