  • This order has approximately 8000 named species. The most common species of amphipod found in and around the Marine Discovery Centre are:

    Habitat: Reef, 0 - 100 m depth
    Distribution: More than 150 species known worldwide, at least 20 in Australian waters.
    Maximum size: Length to 20 mm
    Diet: Algae
  • Talorchestia sp.

    (Edgar, 1997)
    Habitat: Exposed beach, high intertidal zone
    Distribution: Victoria and around Tasmania
    Maximum size: Length to 15 mm
    Diet: Drifting and rotting seaweed
    Comments: 
    These amphipods move by hopping and can be found on the beach by turning over rotting pieces of seaweed.
