| This phylum includes species with a huge
range of body forms, from sea snails to octopus and squid, as well as
scallops, mussels and chitons. All molluscs have the same basic body
pattern, with a head and a muscular foot. These are separate from the
body (known as the visceral mass). The mantle arises from
the body wall and grows over the body, leaving a gap between the mantle
and the body called the mantle cavity. This is usually where you
can find a mollusc's gills. A shell is usually present, though may be
reduced or absent. |
