Tasmanian blenny and big-bellied seahorse |
RV Penghana is the Marine Discovery Centre's dedicated research vessel. She is a Class 1 (passenger carrying) surveyed vessel and our staff are fully qualified, very experienced and are required to regularly carry out safety drills. The Penghana is fully equipped with up to date GPS, radar, digital chart plotter, depth sounder and 3D seabed mapper as well as scientific monitoring equipment, biological sampling gear and an underwater camera. She is a comfortable working platform for up to 16 students plus staff. The Penghana has a rich and varied history. She started life as a commercial cray boat and then spent 18 years as a Patrol and Research vessel with our state sea fisheries. She has been a floating classroom since the Centre opened in 1979 and has safely carried thousands of Tasmanian students to explore the sea. In 2008, the Penghana celebrated 50 years at sea. Her skipper, Tim Nossiter held a morning tea attended by family of the original owner, past crew members, research scientists and others who have had an involvement with her over the years. Phil Wood from the Woodbridge Online Access Centre recorded interviews with guests at the birthday celebrations. These can be accessed through the Online Centre's wikipages. As part of her 50th celebrations, Tim researched and produced a booklet of the vessel's history. An electronic copy of this booklet is available, please contact Tim.
