Fish come in all shapes and sizes, from eels to seahorses, cowfish and stripey trumpeters. They differ from sharks and rays because their skeleton is made of bone instead of cartilage. There are approximately 20 000 living species of bony fish. Most species produce eggs rather than bearing live young, with many spawning (releasing millions of eggs and sperm into the water at a particular moment in time).

At the Marine Discovery Centre, we regularly collect many different types of bony fish. The following families represent the majority of the species housed at the Centre.
