Introduced Marine Species

Introduced Species

The list below are just a sample of the Introduced Species found in Tasmania. These species have been introduced from other countries to Tasmania. They can come through the ballast water on ships (used to balance a ship), with fishing boats and with the importation of other animals, for example some of the species below were introduced by the same vessels bringing live shipments of introduced oysters in the early Twentieth century. Many of these species are creating problems for our native species as they take over their food, habitat and often actually eat our native species. As they come with no predators of their own (i.e. nothing that will eat them), they flourish, breed and become even more of a problem. You may be able to find some of these animals in our Introduced Species Tank at the Marine Discovery Centre. Please take note of their appearance, and if you find any introduced species whilst beach combing anywhere in Tasmania, please contact the CSIRO. Pie Crust Crab
